It was often pottery bits or colored stone of that color, sometimes glass backed by colored foil. This may have been gold flecked paint. This particular piece had been plastered over until 1933, and this accidentally preserved it (or what's left of it).

Mariellen says all is well, and we were on an island yesterday, but we haven't eaten any turkey yet. Lots of chicken and lamb though....
